Downey, CA: Bob’s Big Boy Broiler

Located in the city of Downey, California, this nostalgic diner is a converted used car sales dealership, and was saved from being demolished by becoming a Historic landmark.  The inside has that 1950s “Happy Days” look, where you can have a malt at the counter, where the tables are made out of formica, and the seats are made of vinyl, and the waitress may call you “hon”.

If it’s Wednesday Night: it must be Vintage Car night, as you will find the parking lot filled with old 50s and 60s vintage type cars, ranging from low riders, sedans (if you can call them that), convertibles, to hot rods.  Pretty cool!!  The owners of the cars proudly display their cars, some are trusting enough to go inside, and leave their precious “rides” unattended in the parking lot while they eat dinner.  There is a DJ playing nostalgic music, and families come out to check out these cars from days gone by.

Karen and I come here for the Bob’s chili spaghetti.  The entree is literally chili on top of spaghetti topped with grated cheddar cheese. It comes with garlic toast and a side salad or soup. You can substitute the side for something else like fries, hash browns, or more garlic bread, but the choices are still carbohydrate loaded.  I’m sure it is just as easy to make it at home, but the food isn’t why we come. It is a nostalgic place to enjoy a meal with my friend, and the price won’t break the bank.  Aside from being comfort food, it has become somewhat of a tradition or superstition to have spaghetti before an Anaheim Ducks home game, and well, this place fills the bill.

Bob’s Big Boy Broiler is located at 7447 Firestone Blvd., in Downey, California… about 15 minutes away from the famous Porto’s Cuban bakery.
