Las Vegas: Lawry’s holiday tradition

Lawry’s is one of my favorite restaurants for Prime Rib.  Well, the place better be good at it, as their official name is Lawry’s The Prime Rib, and they serve primarily prime rib, although they do serve rib eye steak (basically the prime rib that’s been grilled), and salmon.  If you are not a fan of prime rib, you probably should go across the street to McCormick and Schmick for steak and fish, or stay on the Strip for the buffet food.

The restaurant isn’t cheap, but the service is impeccable.  From the time you sit down (and they pull the table out, so you sit, not slide into the booth) to the last bite, the service at Lawry’s is second to none.

Your waitress greets you. takes the drink order and brings back fresh, piping hot sourdough bread. After verifying everyone wants prime rib, comes back to perform the famous “Spinning Bowl” salad, made fresh table side. The salads are served on chilled plates, and a chilled fork is offered to each guest.

After the first course is finished and cleared, a trolley of meat is brought table side.  Each guest is asked what size of prime rib they want and how they like their prime rib, and the chef carves the meat according to order.  A generous dollop of mashed potatoes and gravy is added, along with au jus.

I asked for the “California” cut which was easily 8-10 ounces of meat, and plenty for me.  Stephen had the Lawry’s cut, which was a more generous cut of food, along with a beef bone.

The waitress comes back to hand serve the Yorkshire Pudding.  The Yorkshire Pudding is not sweet or to be confused with the gooey milk pudding like the dessert.  Yorkshire pudding is an English side dish made from batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk or water. The dish is bread like, and a staple of the traditional British Sunday roast, and you “sop” up the gravy with the bread.

In addition to the prime rib, we added side dishes of butter peas, creamed corn, and 4-kinds of sauteed mushrooms. Typically, the restaurant adds it to your plate, but if you ask for them on the side, 2 or 3 people can easily share a portion.

During the holidays, Lawry’s brings in carolers to sing Christmas songs.  The singers come to the table side, usually around dessert time and sing 2 or 3 songs of your choosing. Last year we brought Stephen’s mom to Las Vegas, and she enjoyed the experience.  We enjoyed it so much, we decided to make this a yearly tradition and came back with Stephen’s mom and dad.

While this place is far from cheap, it definitely is a classy place.  I have never had a bad meal or bad service at Lawry’s, and as the cliche goes: you get what you pay for.
