Costa Mesa: Empanada’s Place

This tiny place is a neighborhood gem. Located off Harbor Blvd, between the 405 and Baker (behind a Rite Aid parking lot) is this Argentine empanada place. They also serve sandwiches and salads, but their signature items are these tasty, savory hot pockets filled with delicious meats or veggies.

I stopped by on a Friday night, and there was a few customers waiting for their food to go. We wanted to dine in, and the lady said to sit down anywhere, and she’ll come to take our order. The place is tiny, maybe 8 tables inside, and a handful of tables outside.

The menu had quite a variety of meat and vegetarian empanadas. Karen and I decided to share 6 of them, and here’s our pick:

– Cordobesa: Beef with eggs and olives
– Saltena: Beef with potatoes, carrots, peas
– Arabe, lemon herb beef
– Pascualina: Spinach with cheese and white sauce
– Ricotta Queso: Ricotta cheese with mushroom
– Berenjena: Eggplant with tomato sauce and cheese

The empanadas were about 4″ long, and easy to cut in half, so very sharable. Everything was delicious, and quite filling. What I did not know was you had to ask for chimichurri sauce, which would have enhanced our dinner. Disappointed it wasn’t offered. Our eyes were bigger than our stomach, and we only ate 5, leaving behind 1/2 of the cordobesa and 1/2 of the saltena. I ended up taking those halves home to Stephen and added an Arabe for him to try.

The prices are a bit higher than other places I’ve tried. At $3.59 a piece, 2 empanadas can be sufficient for someone. Our 7 empanadas + 2 sodas came to $33 before tip. For dining in, we got 2 dessert cookies, which I also took home to Stephen.

They’re open until 7:00 pm Tuesday to Saturday, until 4:00 Sunday, and closed on Monday. Most people seem to call ahead, as it takes about 15 minutes for your order.

Oh, and cash only. They don’t have a machine, and will send you to Rite Aid to get money.
