Costa Mesa: Marché Moderne

Merry Christmas to me!! My friend and coworker Ken wanted to take me out to lunch for the holidays and surprised me here… which was good, since they’re moving to Crystal Cove Newport Beach in January 2017.

We arrived at 11:30 on the Thursday before Christmas, and was seated in a cozy table for 2 in the small incline area that separated the main dining room and the other dining room. Totally romantic but wasted on 2 friends. Sigh.

Marché Moderne translates as “modern market” and this perfectly describes the cuisine at this cosmopolitan French bistro. I selected the three-course prix fixe “Spontanée” menu while Ken had the steak tartare.

My starter was a Roasted Sunchoke soup, which is a root vegetable similar to artichoke. The main course was the white fish, servied with coriander and fellel forbidden rice and a pickled bell pepper salad. Excellent, and quite filling!

Ken seemed to enjoy his steak tartare, and he paired it with an order of frites, which were perfectly cooked. Amazing and addicting.

Finally for dessert, Ken and I shared my Carmelized Apple Financier, served slightly warm and with a calvados mouselline. While a bit pricey for lunch, it was truly a place for a special occassion. I can’t wait to try their new location in Newport Beach.
