Anaheim: La Pollada Peruvian Grill

I was craving Peruvian food, and my usual “go to” place El Pollo Inka is all the way in the South Bay. Thanks to yelp, I discovered this mom n pop place that’s located down the street from Disneyland, just off Ball and Euclid, in a busy strip mall adjacent to Northgate Market.

Karen and I stopped here on a Tuesday for dinner, and the place was fairly empty, but many tables still left with dishes. We were told to seat anywhere, and a family of 5 behind us did the same.

It’s truly a mom n pop place, as the girl was hostess, waitress, and busboy. While she took our drink order, she also cleared a few tables before disappearing in the back to bring back some hot, toasted bread with butter. Then when she came back with the drinks (canned sodas, so no refills) she took our order.

The Tallerin Saldado (the Peruvian spaghetti) came in a large or junior, so we chose to split the junior. Not thinking it was enough food, we asked if the Chaufa (fried rice) came in a small. The hostess said no, only the large, so we order the large.

The food was made to order, so while we waited, the hostess brought out bowls of the green chicken and potato soup, for my table as well as for the other family.

When our food came, I was amazed how big the portion was. One order could have fed both me and Karen, and still had leftovers.  The spaghetti dish was good, but very peppery. It overwhelmed the dish, and it wasn’t our favorite. I probably would skip this next time. The fried rice, however, was very flavorful. The rice was hot and fluffy, full of chicken. Both dishes were garnished with a lot of green onions.

Dinner for 2, with the 2 canned sodas came to just over $31. Service could be more attentive. For instance, when the hostess brought out the entrees, she could have cleared the soup bowls. During the meal, the hostess could have checked up on us. And, when it was time to pay the check, she was no where to be found. I had to get my own foam container for my leftover.

Overall, this should be a 3 star experience, but because the food portions were generous for the price, I’ll give it 4 stars for now. Oh and they have a lunch special, valid every day from 11-3.
