Rutabegorz has been located in Fullerton since 1970. They also have 2 other locations, all specializing in vegetarian dishes. They are not a vegetarian restaurant, as the serve lean meats such as white breast of chicken, turkey, and even salami, but if you’re looking for a steak, there’s Stubrik’s located 1/2 block down the street. Their menu is rather eclectic ranging from salads, soups, sandwiches to vegetarian friendly entrees like enchiladas, chilis, and stews. Some items are even vegan.
One of their most popular menu item is the “dip of the month” which is only 45 cents with any entree. The menu rotates, based on what is in season. This month the DOM was the Santa Fe Cranberry Salsa. The initial bite was sweet, then the santa fe spices kicked in. An amazing salsa for a mere 45 cents!
For our dinner, Stephen and I chose the 1/2 sandwich and soup.
We both had the salami sandwich on squaw, which came with cole slaw and a pineapple wedge. I chose the bowl of chicken and rice soup (chunks of chicken, rice and fresh vegetables in a clear broth), while Stephen had the Ruta’s Killer Chili, a vegetarian chili topped with grated cheddar cheese and fresh tomatoes. It was a meal in itself!
Dinner came to just over $24 before tip and tax, and it hit the spot on a cold night.
