Brea: Urban Plates now

Comfort food at a fair price is what I like about Urban Plates. Located in the new Whole Foods shopping plaza, behind the building from Slapfish, and across from Charles Schwab is this new Brea location. They currently have 7 locations in California.

Urban Plates can be summed up as a gourmet cafeteria.  When you walk in, you’re greeted by a sign overhead which points to salads, and “other food”.

The salads are made to order, and you can pick from a variety of salads, or customize your own for one price. If you are not in the mood for for a salad, move down the line and you’ll find sandwiches, also made to order and with a variety of artisan breads.

Not in the mood for bread?  You can get a plated meal, which comes with sliced to order protein (steak, chicken, fish, or ribs) and a choice of 2 hot or cold sides, ranging from comfort Mac n Cheese to steamed asparagus to a chilled beet salad.

If you’re not sure what you want, they’ll give you a sample of their food to try.

I chose the steak ($1 upcharge) and it was cooked medium rare, and I added creamy mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus.  Karen had the grilled chicken (dark meat requested), with miso sweet potatoes and mushrooms, and steamed asparagus.

Move along down the line and you can find flatbread pizza, soups, braises and the best part.. dessert!

Prices are affordable, averaging $11 for an entree.  They have natural soda, so no commercial stuff here.  Plenty of space for seating inside and outside, and even communal dining if you want to make new friends.
