Amarillo, TX: the Big Texan Steak Ranch

Everything is bigger in Texas, and in Texas, beef is king. Everywhere I looked, there was a Texas steakhouse. One, in particular, kept advertising as we got closer to Amarillo: The Big Texan Steak Ranch and their “free” 72 ounce steak.

We drove by it on our way to the hotel. The parking lot at 6:00 was packed! So we decided to relax a bit and try going in later around 7:30. That made a huge difference, as the parking lot had emptied and our wait was probably 20 minutes.

The steaks are Texas sized and we tried to find the smallest one on the menu. I think we found 12 or 14 ounces, compared to 32-50 ounces.

Each entrée came with a soup or salad, potato and a side, which we tried the Mac and cheese with green chilies.

It wasn’t the best steak we’ve had. In fact, it was just ok. I was told the prime rib was much better. Oh well. At least I can say we stopped at the Big Texan Steak Ranch.
