Day trip: Koln (Cologne) and Darmstadt

Koln is Germany’s 4th largest city, and supposedly about 2000 years old.  It was a city that Stephen wanted to check out, so we decided to make a day trip out of it since it was only a 2 1/2 hour drive.

The Koln Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Center. Building began in 1248, and the construction of this Gothic masterpiece took place in several stages and was completed in  1880.

Stephen went to check out the inside of the Cathedral while I went for a Starbucks break.

While heading out of Koln, we make a quick trip to Darmstadt, the town Stephen’s dad was from. It wasn’t really out of our way and we arrived around 6:00. We found a mall and parked there.

Stephen had memories of visiting this area was a kid, and even remembered the mall, stores, and ice cream places his dad would take him.One place that was new was the Darmstadt Starbucks, which fortunately had a city mug:

w011 It was getting late, and we decided to have dinner in Darmstadt. Once the sun went down, things were closing up. After roamed around the tiny town. we ended up eating Turkish food at the mall before heading back to Frankfurt. It was probably one of the best mall food I’ve had.
