Santa Ana: Curry House

Curry House is a fast food style place, but with waiter service.  It’s not going to be “the best” curry you’ll ever have, but its good comfort food, at a fair price. They have restaurant locations throughout California, with 3 locations in Orange County: Irvine, Cypress, and this one in Santa Ana.  I’ve been coming to this location since they opened in 2014.

So what is Japanese curry?  Well, Japanese curry has all the spices like Indian curry, but it’s more gravy-like, and slightly sweeter.  It doesn’t have that overwhelming curry kick that Indian curry has.

Karen and I came here on a Wednesday night, and she had the hamburger curry with white rice. Dinner entrees come with soup or salad, and she chose the miso soup.

I had the Katsu chicken curry with the brown rice ($1 extra), which is a chicken filet that’s coated with panko breading, then deep fried to a golden crisp, served with a side house salad.

If I had to recommend a first timer dish, I would say go for the Katsu chicken.  The chicken is moist and crispy, but not overly fried.  They add the filet on top of a bed of rice, and to the side of the rice and katsu is the small lake of curry, where you control how much or little you wish to add to your food. The mild curry is not spicy at all.  You get the essence of curry without the heat.

Plenty of free parking, and they can accommodate a large group during the week.
