BBQ Fundraiser for the fallen Whittier police officers

Today, my office was supposed to have a fundraiser for Baker to Vegas, a law enforcement footrace which starts in Baker, California, and ends in Las Vegas, Nevada. The money raised would go toward the entrance fee, and supplies needed for the event to be held next month from March 25-26.  Instead, of going toward the Baker to Vegas fund, all proceeds went to the families of 2 fallen Whittier police officers.

On Monday, while many of us stayed home to celebrate President’s Day,  Keith Boyer, a 25 year veteran police officer from Whittier was shot and killed on Monday morning by a gang member on parole. Another office, Patrick Hazel, was also wounded, and is in critical condition. Our office decided that the fundraiser should go to a better cause.

The Baker to Vegas committee extended the deadline and allowed staff to purchase meals until the barbecue company ran out of food.  The catering company, “Out of this World BBQ” did an outstanding job, and from what I heard, they also donated their proceeds to this fundraiser. The food was excellent, and the office stepped up and donated a larger contribution than the suggested lunch cost.  Kudos to those who participated.
