Benjie’s Deli is a restaurant and bar located off Tustin Avenue / 17th Street in Santa Ana. It’s as close to a Jewish deli you can get in Orange County. They have so-called “piled high” sandwiches, matzo soup, and all sorts of deli comfort food.
On Friday, October 6, Benjie’s celebrated 50 years in Orange County by offering a $5 pastrami or corned beef sandwich lunch special. My coworker and I arrived at 11:00 and was greeted with a 50 golden balloons.
After we were seated, we were given a raffle ticket, which a drawing was held every 20 minutes (winner had to be present to win).
We started off our lunch with an order of the stuffed cabbage, which I’ve never had. OMG were these cabbages delicious!! Cabbage filled with beef and topped with a sweet tomato sauce. I could eat a dozen of these.
The sandwiches normally are $14, so the $5 sandwich truly is a bargain. It came with a side of potato, macaroni, or cole slaw salad. I added a huge side of fries (enough for 2) and even took home half of my food for the next day.
Happy Anniversary, Benjie’s. Your food may not be like going to NYC, but it’s the next best thing.
