Orange: Pepito’s  Taco Tuesday

I was craving gringos style tacos for Taco Tuesday. Pepito’s, located down the street from the Outlets of Orange, where the City Drive meets Memory Lane, fits the bill.

They have street tacos with meats from Carne Asada, Carnitas, shredded beef and shredded or grilled chicken, and they also have the greasy, hardshell tacos with shredded chicken, shredded beef, or potato stuffed with iceberg lettuce and cheese… All for only $1.75 each on Tuesdays.

They also have other items, from wet burritos to plated food, but for this visit, it was strictly Taco Tuesday.

Karen chose 2 grilled chicken soft tacos, with lettuce and cheese instead of cilantro and onions. I chose one each of the hardshell tacos: shredded chicken, shredded beef, and potato.

If you dine in, they start you off with a bowl of crispy hot tortilla chips and a empty bowl for you to pick your own salsa from the salsa bar. The salsa bar has a variety of salsas, from (I kid you not) gringo salsa to green salsa to red salsa to the hot salsa, which was more like pico de gallo than salsa. There’s also the traditional carrots and jalapenos, cilantro, onions, and lemons.

It did not take long for our tacos to arrive. Karen said her grilled chicken taco was very tender and moist. Too bad I cannot say the same about the shredded chicken taco. It was very dry and bland. The shredded beef was not too bad, and the salsa definitely helped it out. My favorite was the potato. The potato itself did not have a lot of flavor, but it’s soaked up the salsa and I was contemplating for another. The 3 tacos were sufficient, but I’m sure I could have eaten 1 or 2 more.

Giving this place 4 stars for cheap tacos on Taco Tuesday. With 2 sodas, it came to $13 and change. I don’t think I’d get their tacos at full price. Also, they had good service. They stopped by our table twice, to see how things were going, and to refill our drinks.
