I’ve been following the SoCal food truck scene since the beginning, back in 2010. There’s been a ton of food trucks who have come and gone, but only those food trucks who has what it takes are still around. Soho Taco is one who is still around.
I first tried Soho back in 2011, when food blogger Mad Hungry Woman introduced this new taco truck to Orange County. My first reaction was “another loncheria, eh?”. I was wrong. Everything, from the food, the condiments, down to the tortillas are fresh and made by hand. The tortillas aren’t flimsy store bought ones. They’ve got substance.
Soho isn’t the cheapest taco truck in town, but you do get what you pay for, and that’s quality. Hands down this truck has better quality than most taqueria you find anywhere in LA or Orange County.
So here’s a hidden secret to get the best tacos for cheap: go to their Taco Tuesdays! They sell these delicious tacos (normally $3 and up) for just 99 cents from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Find out where they are at sohotaco.com.
I found the truck located off Dyer and Orange (across the street from their Corporate office in Santa Ana) and made Taco Tuesday with 10 minutes to spare. I had 3 tacos, and ordered Karen 2 tacos (she was running late).
The tacos are hearty, and they’re flavorful. Aside from the shrimp, the tacos are given to you plain. You build your own to your liking, and there’s a variety of salsa, pico de gallo, onions, cilantro, and limes. The carne asada is well marinaded and can stand alone without the toppings. The carnitas is flavorful as well, but nothing beats their shrimp taco. The shrimp they use are plump, cooked perfectly, and the portions are generous. If I had to find fault, Soho cooks your tacos to order. So if you’re in a hurry, this may not be the best choice.
Taco Tuesday is the way to go! With a soda, my bill came to $6 and change. What a bargain, and those 3 tacos filled me up. Thumbs up to Soho.
