Santa Ana: Benjies NY Deli revisited

Benjie’s is a New York style deli located in Santa Ana, California. The place is divided into 2 sections: a bar area where patrons can have a cocktail, happy hour food and watch a ball game in this newly renovated area.  Then, there’s the counter and dining area, which has been frozen in time, circa 1960-70 with booths and Formica counter top tables. Senior citizens seem to like this place, even though the prices are not that cheap.

I stopped here with Karen and we took advantage of their “Early Bird” dinner for $12.95. The special is a complete dinner, which comes with soup or salad, the entree, and dessert. Drinks are extra.

I chose the fried chicken, while Karen had the fried fish and chips and we both chose the chicken noodle soup as our starter.  My fried chicken was a half chicken, but the waitress said the chicken is tiny and said I probably could finish my meal.  She was right.  It was a tiny chicken, but tasty and hit the spot.

Karen’s plate of fish and chips was bigger than we anticipated.  There were 4 generous pieces of fish with piping hot crinkled fries.  She was only able to finish 3, so she could save room for dessert.  For dessert, she chose jello (there’s always room for jello!) and I had the tapioca pudding, which is just like how grandma would make it.

Overall, not a bad deal.  We left satisfied and had our fix of greasy food for the day.
