Southern California has a ton of micro-breweries, and San Diego seems to have the lion’s share and we decided to visit one called Iron Fist Brewery. About a year ago, Stephen tried a beer at Disney California Adventure called “Velvet Glove” by Iron Fist, and he fell in love with it. We checked all over and with the exception of going to bars, we couldn’t find them at liquor stores, even the big one like Total Wine.
Iron Fist is located in Vista, CA, near Escondido. From Orange County, it took a little over an hour and a half to get there. The place is located in a small, industrial park, with a tiny bar and a handful of tables. Fortunately for us, there was a free punk concert / food drive / fundraiser going on, so we got free entertainment while trying their beers.
While enjoying our flight of beer, a nice guy started chatting with us. We told him that Stephen’s favorite is the Velvet Glove, and he said “my beer is Mint Pillow”. I interpreted it as “my go to beer is Mint Pillow” but he actually meant he made the beer. His name is Ken Schmidt and he was the brewmaster for Iron Fist’s Mint Pillow. His face is even on the bottle!! How cool was that?
We left around 3:00, and with about 8 bottles of their Velvet Glove and Mint Pillow in my truck.
